What to Do When School Support Is Not Provided in Singapore
A practical way to record problems, seek a review and clarify the next contact.
Know the limits. Mainstream and SPED schools have different provision and admissions arrangements; support and assessment are individualised. This guide is general information, not a substitute for local professional or legal advice. If a child faces immediate safety risks, contact appropriate local services promptly.
Steps to take
- Make a dated list of supports agreed with the school and where implementation has differed.
- Ask for a meeting with the class teacher and the staff member coordinating SEN support, and request practical next steps.
- Record any adjustments, responsible people and agreed review date; send a polite written summary after the meeting.
- If concerns remain unresolved, follow the school's feedback or leadership channels and consult MOE's current guidance rather than assuming an automatic assessment, placement or appeal entitlement.
What to put in your notes
- Your child's strengths, needs and what they say helps them.
- Specific examples and dates, rather than assumptions about causes.
- The changes or support you are asking the school to consider.
- The name of the person responsible for replying and when you will follow up.
Use the free printable Singapore school meeting checklist to prepare your questions and agreed actions.
Questions to ask at the meeting
- What can be tried now while we understand my child's needs better?
- Who will coordinate the plan and communicate with us?
- How will we know whether the support is helping?
- When will we review progress together?
