What to Do When School Support Is Not Provided in New Zealand

A practical way to record problems, seek a review and clarify the next contact.

Know the limits. A complaint about a school and a complaint about a Ministry learning support service use different routes. This guide is general information, not a substitute for local professional or legal advice. If a child faces immediate safety risks, contact appropriate local services promptly.

Steps to take

  1. Record examples of the support that was planned and what your child is experiencing at school.
  2. Ask the teacher and learning support coordinator, if there is one, to review the plan and clarify responsibility.
  3. If school concerns remain unresolved, raise them with the principal and then the school board under the school's complaints process.
  4. If still dissatisfied with the school's response, the Ministry advises contacting a local Ministry office. Complaints about a Ministry learning support service have a separate process.
