Country-specific guidance

Do not assume an EHCP, US IEP or another country's process applies here. Use the local education framework and current official guidance.

Mainstream support

In mainstream classes, class or subject teachers remain responsible for pupils, with additional supports available where needed. Special Education Teachers are part of the mainstream support model.

Specialist settings

The NCSE describes special classes in mainstream schools and special schools as additional placement options for pupils who need more specialised or intensive support.

What to do next

Ask the school what support is currently in place, how progress is reviewed and who coordinates it. For questions about specialist provision, families can contact the NCSE or local SENO.
