IDP reviews in Wales: what parents should check

An IDP must be kept under review. Use the review to check whether the description of ALN is still accurate, whether the Additional Learning Provision (ALP) is specific enough, and whether the provision is actually being delivered.

Wales uses the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system and Individual Development Plans (IDPs). England EHCP guidance does not apply.

Before the review

Collect the current IDP, recent school information, examples of progress or continuing difficulty, reports from professionals and a short list of changes you want considered. Mark any ALP that is vague, missing or not being delivered.

At the review

Ask what evidence shows that the current ALP is working, whether outcomes need changing, who is responsible for each provision and when progress will be checked. Ask for your views and the learner’s views to be recorded.

After the review

Keep the written outcome and compare any revised IDP with the points discussed. If you disagree with a school-maintained IDP, ask about local-authority reconsideration and the local disagreement-resolution arrangements.
