IDP wording in Wales: making ALP clear and specific

The ALP section should make the support understandable and deliverable. Parents can ask who will provide support, what will be provided, how often, for how long and how progress will be reviewed.

Wales uses the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system and Individual Development Plans (IDPs). England EHCP guidance does not apply.

Spot vague wording

Phrases such as “access to”, “opportunities for” or “support as required” may leave practical questions unanswered. Ask what the wording means on an ordinary school day.

Questions to ask

Ask about frequency, duration, group size, staff expertise, equipment or programme, and how missed provision will be handled. Not every provision needs identical detail, but the plan should be usable by the people implementing it.

Record concerns

Send proposed wording or questions in writing and keep the response with your IDP records. If disagreement remains, use the review, reconsideration or dispute route that applies to the decision-maker.
