School will not request an EHCP — what can a parent do?
A school does not have to make the request for you. In England, a parent can ask the local authority directly for an EHC needs assessment.
Processes can change. Check current official guidance and local procedures.
Your next step
Find your local authority’s parent request route and explain why you think an assessment may be necessary. If possible, still ask school for copies of SEN Support plans, intervention records, reviews and recent reports.
Keep the request focused
- Describe the child’s needs.
- Describe support already provided.
- Explain what difficulties remain.
- Explain why you believe an assessment may be needed.
