What counts as a related service?

IDEA’s definition includes transportation and developmental, corrective and other supportive services required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education. The regulation lists examples such as speech-language pathology, audiology, interpreting, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, counseling, orientation and mobility, school health and nurse services, social work and parent counseling and training.

Does every student receive every service?

No. Related services are individualized. The question is whether a particular service is required for the child to benefit from special education and receive FAPE. Evaluation data and the child’s educational needs should drive the IEP Team discussion.

What should the IEP make clear?

When a related service is required, the IEP should clearly identify the service and the projected date, frequency, location and duration as required by the IEP content rules. Clear wording helps families and providers know what must actually be delivered.

Some medical-device limits are specific

IDEA excludes certain services related to surgically implanted medical devices, while preserving other related-service and school health responsibilities. If this issue applies, review the specific federal regulation and any state guidance with the child’s team.
